Hello everyone, I am excited to share with you an experiment that I participated in. I decided to go four full hours without my technology. That includes my phone, computer, ipad and my television. That means I was away from social media for a whole four hours. That sounds impossible right! I thought the same thing. It actually was a beautiful four hours.

I decided to complete the four hours without technology from around 6pm to 10pm because that is the only free time I have with school and basketball taking over my life. To begin the four hours, I began asking myself if I can really do this. I also did not do myself any justice, because I started off in my room where my phone, computer and my television take place, so technology is just screaming at me to use it. I stood strong and decided to think of things to do and still remain productive.
Many things came to mind while staying away from technology. First, I decided to go to the basketball gym to shoot and get my mind away from boredom. Usually when I get up shots at the basketball gym, I play music. I began looking for my phone to plug it in, but then I remembered that I cannot use my phone. It was a close one and I am happy I left my phone at the room. As I began shooting at the gym, I didn’t realize how calm and silent the gym can be without the music blasting. I liked the silence a lot and it helped me focus on the task at hand and that’s perfecting my basketball craft.
When I got back to my bedroom, I planned to try and be productive as possible in the two hours remaining. I began thinking of things like reading, making some food or having my girlfriend come over. Having my girlfriend come over was hard because I was not allowed to communicate with her so that wasn’t a possibility. I took a shower and decided to read. I like to read books that help my perspective and mentality to help improve my mindfulness. Here is a great article on how reading increases mindfulness.
I was reading a book called Chop Wood Carry Water and I couldn’t stop reading it. It consumed me and made me forget about technology. It was great and I am really happy I decided to read that book for the remainder of four hours without technology.

The discoveries I made were very helpful on learning more things about not only my surroundings but myself. I learned that, not only can I survive without my phone and television, but I can be very productive with the time provided. I was definitely able to go all four hours without my phone even though my girlfriend was pretty mad about it. I had to tell her why I wasn’t responding and she completely understood. I then told her all about my experience and she decided to try it. I said, “but you still have to communicate with me”. All in all, I really enjoyed this experiment and I will continue to get away from my phone and television for periods of time.
